Too Many Tamales

The girls and I made tamales yesterday. We made 3 1/2 dozen in the morning to feed the fence building crew lunch. We then made another 4 dozen in the afternoon to freeze. We had such a good time and the house smelled wonderful! This picture was taken two years ago. We had been learning about our ancestors and the girls wanted both sides of the family represented so they dressed in their pioneer costumes and made tamales.
We ate so many tamales yesterday we were reminded of a book my mom sent us called Too Many Tamales by Gary Soto. It's a great children's book we've enjoyed reading over and over again.

Mmmm. We made tamales again on Thursday with some friends who wanted to learn. It is fun, and the house does smell delicious on tamale days! What kind do you make? We make chicken and pork. Next time I'm trying "rajas," poblano chile strips and cheese. Those are my favorites.

We made just pork this time, but I usually make chicken too. There is a book I saw on Amazon called Tamales that I've been eyeing. Looks like it has tons of different recipes.

Calandria, this is Monste's sister Vanessa. Where are you from? I LOVE RAJAS!!!!!!!!!!! Aside from Tacos al Pastor (only made in Puebla will do) Rajas are my all time favorite food!!! YUMMY!!! Shoot, now I have to go to the store and get some chile poblanos to make them. The way I had them is you fry them with onion in butter add cream and cheese. yummy! OK Motts no more food posts please. I keep reading them late and night and keep getting HUNGRY!

Hi Vanessa! I am from Maine, far from tamales country! :-) My husband is from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico. His grandmother's rajas tamales are my very favorites! They haven't turned out well for me in the past, but I'm hoping to try a batch next week.

Que vivan los tamales!

(My husband's favorite food in the world is tacos al pastor.)

I was hoping to come across your sweet roll /orange roll recipe. Did I miss it? It seems I have tried dozens of recipes and havent' found the 'right' one yet!
Love what you're doing with your daughters! We have 3 girls (4, 3, 18 mos.) and expecting our first son. We are planning to homeschool also. (Well, I should say we are homeschooling! the kids learn so much everyday!) keep up the wonderful hard work!
